Cleaning out my thought closet to fill it with truth

by Paige on July 10, 2009

I’m on week two of the bible study Me Myself and Lies by Jennifer Rothschild. This week is all about filling your thought closet with the truth. The truth found in the Bible that is. The study has been challenging me on the labels I’ve placed in my thought closet and the faulty assumptions I’ve had that have led to rotten roots. Let me explain.

In my thought closet I’ve got labels like procrastinator, unorganized and annoyed. These labels I’ve given to myself over time either through my own labeling or from what others have said. We all have names, like idiot or failure or ugly, that we call ourselves in the secret places of our minds. These names are labels that usually make us feel worse than we were ever meant to feel. When we place these labels on ourselves the enemy has a field day with us and eventually gets us discouraged enough that a clear “God-ordained” thought is almost impossible to have.

Once we’ve stuck the bad labels in our minds, then they lead to having faulty assumptions. These faulty assumptions will become the foundation for which we build our thoughts and actions. Before you know it, you will start assuming something is true when it isn’t. For example, one of my faulty assumptions has been that if I will do everything right then God will always bless me and make everything work out the way I want it to. I’ve assumed that my behavior will grant me God’s favor and grace, when the truth is God’s favor and grace were given to me way before I ever did anything right and my righteous acts don’t necessarily impress God and make him want to do more for me.

Isaiah 64:6 says,”All of us have become like one who is unclean, and all our righteous acts are like filthy rags; we all shrivel up like a leaf, and like the wind our sins sweep us away.”

After I’ve allowed the labels and faulty assumptions to sit in my mind long enough they eventually start growing roots. If you’ve ever grown anything then you know that if you have bad roots then your most likely going to have bad fruit. So at some point you have to get to the source of the problem and pull it out by the roots.

So what’s the remedy for cleaning out your thought closet? Well according to Jennifer there are 3 C’s you need to remember.

1.Crush
2. Capture
3.Concur

You must first crush the lie and demolish every thought opposed to God. Second, you must capture the thoughts and hold them captive because they have broken God’s law. Third, you must concur your thoughts with truth and make your thoughts obey Christ. This is when, according to Jennifer, you need to cover the lies you’ve been thinking with the truth found in scriptures.

It’s not an easy task when you’ve got lots of labels to cover up, but with God’s help you too can clean out your thought closet and replace it with a whole new wardrobe. A wardrobe of truth.

Sincerely,
Paige

Here are some truthful labels I liked that were listed by Jennifer in the Study Me, Myself and Lies.

  • I am a new creation (2 Cor 5:17)
  • I am forgiven (Eph 1:7-8)
  • I am gifted with power, love, and a sound mind (2 Tim 1:7)
  • I am chosen to be fruitful (John 15:16)
  • I am confident (Phil 1:6)
  • I am welcome in God’s presence (Eph 2:18)
  • I am being transformed ( 2 Cor 3:18)
  • I am a friend of God (John 15:15)
  • I am valuable to God (1 Cor 6:20)
  • I am welcomed to draw near to God (Eph 3:12)

I am loving this study! It’s helping me “clean out” the ugly labels that I have thrown on myself! Isn’t God amazing!

Hugs-

Jennifer
