Becoming someone others want to be around

by Paige on June 16, 2009

The Noticer book is still fresh on my brain and the reason for that is because of this statement I read in the book. “Young man, you must become a person that others want to be around! This is far and away the greatest success secret in existence. A man or woman who has become someone others want to be around holds the world by the tail.” p.135

Read that again if you have to and let it sink in for a minute.

Are you becoming someone others want to be around? Are you fun, happy or even excited about life? Or are you depressed, complaining and whining all the time about the circumstances or people in your life? In The Noticer,  the old man Jones, says the people that are the most successful and get the most “breaks” in life are those that other people want to be around. They naturally get more encouragement and through that encouragement they get more opportunities for more success. I’m sure you probably know a few people like this who seem to always be getting ahead and they seem as if their life actually works.

So how can you become someone others want to be around. Well, I don’t claim to have all the answers to that question, but you can start by asking yourself the following questions everyday. (By the way, these are from the book.) Check yourself in as many areas as you can dream up.

  • What is it about me that other people would change if they could?
  • What is it about the way I dress that other people would change if they could?
  • What is it about the way I act that other people would change if they could?
  • What is it about the way I talk that other people would change if they could?

Now I know some of you reading this might be saying, “I don’t want to change these things about myself.” To that I would use a quote from Rick Warren’s book “The Purpose Driven Life,” “This life is not about you.” God created us for Him and to be used by Him and the more you can become someone others want to be around, you are naturally going to have more opportunities in life and a greater impact on the lives you touch.

So it’s up to you today. Ask God to show you what areas you can change and then ask Him to give you the courage and the wisdom to change. He’s ready to meet you right where you are and hold your hand until you get to the place you need to be.

Thanks for stopping by.

Sincerely,
Paige

Good word, Paige. I guess I’d also ask all thoses questions, but insert “God” for others…because it is all about Him. Your blog today reminded me of what my dad used to say to me. He would say, “You are becoming what you will become.” I doubt that it meant much to me as a child or as a teenager, but the idea that what I am doing today will affect who I am tomorrow is true and I think about it often now. “Play to movie”…isn’t that what you’d say?
Thanks, again, for your thought provoking blog. I enjoy reading it!
