Walking with God: Talk to Him, Hear from Him, Really By John Eldredge

I stumbled across this book in a stack of books at my church. I’ve read other books by John Eldredge,  like his popular book for men Wild At Heart and a book written with his wife Stasi called Love and War, so I knew I would probably enjoy this one as well. Walking with God is a little different from John’s other books in that there are no chapters but rather short stories from John’s life which will help anyone recapture the intimate walk with Jesus Christ that we are all meant to have.

John says that, “Intimacy with God is the purpose of our lives. It’s why God created us. Not simply to believe in hm, though that is a good beginning. Not only to obey him, though that is a higher life still. God created us for intimate fellowship with himself, and in doing so he established the goal of our existence – to know him, love him, and live our lives in an intimate relationship with him.”

The stories throughout the book are short enough to be read quickly and still take away a practical lesson from them. I personally could relate to his story about “Things That Go Bump In The Night.” This story was about a time where John starting waking up at 4:30 in the morning. His first thoughts were. “There goes the night. I’m hosed. I can’t go back to sleep.” Then a couple of hours passes and he thinks, “You’re probably going to start waking up at 4:30 a lot. It just comes with getting older. And it’s not so bad really. You can live with that.” He says he started making these subtle agreements in his head and asks the reader how many things do we surrender with subtle agreements like this. I know lately with the lack of sleep and my hormones from just giving birth being out of whack, I’ve made several agreements like his. I have never really stopped to realize how many negative agreements I have made with the devil about several things and I just take the thoughts as if they are normal and something I have to deal with. John stresses that God wants to give us rest so we will be effective for the work he has for us to do on this earth and that the enemy is always trying to steal something from us especially our sleep.

This was just one example among many of how John has learned to walk and talk with God on a daily basis about everything. I really enjoyed this book and learned how simple it truly is to walk with God, hear from Him and experience his presence in your every day life. If this sounds like a book you’d be interested in and you’d like to know more about John Eldredge, his ministry or this book, feel free to go to www.walkingwithgod.net or just watch this short video.

Sincerely,
Paige
